On May 3rd and 4th, Prof. XUE Lan, Dean of the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM), and Director of CIDEG, Tsinghua University. was appointed by Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the member of the United Nations University (UNU) Council. He also attended the Sixty-Fifth UNU Council Meeting in the United Nations Office at Vienna.

The UN University found in 1973 was an independent organization of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The mission of the UN University is to dedicate to resolve the pressing global problems of human survival, development and welfare that are the concern of the United Nations through collaborative research and education with its Peoples and the Member States. There are more than 30 research centres or projects of the UN University around the world, serving to an important think tank and postgraduate teaching organization.

The UNU Council is composed of 12 appointed members and three ex officio members (the UN Secretary-General, the UNESCO Director-General and the UNITAR Executive Director). Appointed members included former UN Ambassadors of U.S., Japan and Poland, former Vice President of the World Bank, Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, Director of Sao Paulo Research Foundation and Director General of Delhi Policy Group.

Prof. XUE Lan and the other members would be responsible for devising the principles and policies for University’s operations to ensure the effectiveness of the University’s organizations. Besides, Prof. XUE Lan would also be committed to enhancing communication and cooperation between UNU and Tsinghua University.
