自1999年起 Mike Zachar即任职于美国芝加哥大学，担任社会科学和计算服务主任，至今已超过20年时间。他率领的技术团队主要致力于5个相关方面的运营：服务器支持，桌面支持，地理信息系统，社会科学数据存档，和行政系统支持。

Mike Zachar has worked at the University of Chicago for over 20 years.  He has been the Director of Computing Services for the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago since 1999. He directs a team of 25 technicians that operate in five functional areas: Server Support, Desktop Support, Geographic Information Systems, Social Sciences Data Archive, and Administrative Systems Support.

Introduction

正如很多世界一流大学一样，美国芝加哥大学有着一批思想各异的卓越学者。社会科学计算服务（SSCS）所做的就是把这群学者的各种想法形成学术产出（如书籍、文章发表、被资助的研究项目等）。芝加哥大学社会科学计算服务主任Mike Zachar将做客清华大学公共管理学院，并主要就以下方面发表自己的见解：（1）社会科学中的高性能计算（HPC）。（2）SSCS支持的研究项目和SSCS对这些项目的支持情况。（3）Mike 在芝加哥大学建立的全面数据服务——社会科学数据归档。

At the University of Chicago, just as at other top universities in the world, there are clusters of great minds think not necessarily alike. Helping those great minds develop various ideas into academic outputs (books, published papers, funded research projects, etc.) is what Social Sciences Computing Services (SSCS) do and we do it differently. Mike Zachar, Director of SSCS, will talk about, among other things, 1) HPC in social sciences; 2) different research projects that SSCS supports and how SSCS helps those projects to fructify; 3) Social Sciences Data Archive, a comprehensive data service that Mike has founded at the University of Chicago.
